Judith Lanigan is an International Circus and Street Theatre Artist
whose speciality is the Hula Hoop.


Pictured is the Dying Swan. Created in 2000 Judith Lanigan’s solo piece ‘The Dying Swan’ is a hula hoop act based on the ballet divertissement choreographed by Fokine for Anna Pavlova in the early 20th century. Using hoop skills learnt at the Moscow State Circus School and contemporary clown techniques, the Dying Swan has played at many international Arts and Street Theatre festivals, Comedy and Burlesque events and in Circus, both traditional and contemporary.

Judith Lanigan is acknowledged by Austrade as an Australian Export Product for her international touring with the Dying Swan,which can be performed in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Japanese.

Writer For and About Circus

Judith Lanigan uses her experience as a circus artist and her love of research to create circus related fiction and show structures for circus performance. She is a novelist whose work has been optioned for feature film.
Judith Lanigan’s first novel 'A True History of the Hula Hoop' received an Australian Society of Author mentorship award for unpublished authors and was short-listed for the Varuna Award for unpublished authors before being withdrawn due to an offered publishing contract with Picador. Judith Lanigan writes and dramaturges circus for performance, particularly show structure, which allows for the use of skill specific, and clown specific acts. Her work is usually based on historical research and her training in contemporary clown gives her a particular interest in creating show structures and storyline that allow for the essential nature of the clown character.
